Athens police log, Nov. 19-Dec. 2 (2024)

The following list of crimes were reported by the Athens Clarke County Police Department:

Dec. 2

Burglary: A W Broad Street residence was burglarized between 8 a.m. and 8:30 a.m. Dec. 1. Nothing is known missing. A possible suspect was named.

Burglary: A west side residence was burglarized between 2 p.m. Dec. 1 and 2:30 a.m. Dec. 2. TVs, a video game console, laptop, and tablet were stolen. The total value was $1,450.

Robbery: Around 6 p.m. Dec. 1 officers responded to a fight in progress in the 200 block of Nellie B Avenue. Upon arrival, contact was made with a man who advised as he was walking home from the store he was jumped by three black males. He said they punched him in the face, threw him to the ground, and rammed his head into a parked vehicle. During the assault his cellphone valued at $150 was stolen. He sustained injuries to his face. EMS responded but he refused transport. The man said he recognized the suspects from the area but he did not know their names. The first suspect had short hair and wore a black jacket or hoodie and dark jeans. The second suspect had long hair and the third suspect wore a white jacket. The investigation continues.

Dec. 1

Robbery: A man reported he was robbed while sitting in his car outside his Sycamore Drive residence. The incident occurred on Dec. 1 around 3:30 a.m. The victim stated he came home from downtown and was sitting in his car when he saw a Honda pull up behind him. The victim said a tall white male approached him and pulled a knife and demanded money. The victim said he initially refused but later gave the suspect his money. According to the victim the suspect punctured the victim’s car tire when the suspect left. This incident is under investigation.

Burglary: A woman said her Coleridge Court apartment was burglarized between 8 p.m. on Nov. 29 and 3:20 p.m. on Nov. 30. Video games, video game equipment, a tablet and several pairs of shoes were taken. The merchandise is valued at $700. A suspect was named in the report.

Burglary: A woman reported someone attempted to burglarize Atlanta Union Mission on Jefferson Road. The woman said the incident occurred overnight between Nov. 29-30. Entry was not made as the suspect was not able to pry open the door.

Burglary: A Milledge Avenue residence (fraternity) was burglarized between Nov. 26 and 30. Entry was made by kicking a back door. Four Xbox video systems were taken, total value of $600.

Burglary:A man reported someone tried to break into a Danielsville Road residence on Dec. 1 around 4:25 a.m. The man said earlier this evening he saw an individual hanging around and that the individual asked him for a cigarette. The man said he told the individual no and went inside. Later the man heard someone jump up on his deck and jiggle the door knob. When the man turned on the lights the suspect ran away.

Entering auto: A Honda Accord and a Toyota 4Runner were entered while parked at a Clifton Drive residence. The incident occurred between midnight and 8 a.m. on Nov. 30. A GPS Unit was taken.

Nov. 30

Robbery: On Nov. 29 officers responded to an Armed Robbery at the Exxon on Commerce Road. The clerk reported two men described as black males wearing masks entered the store. The suspects pointed guns at a customer and took the clerk's wallet and cell phone; the suspects also took an unreleased amount of cash from the business. This incident is still under investigation.

Burglary: A woman reported a vacant rental property she owns on Westchester Drive was broken into and vandalized. The incident occurred between Nov. 3 and 29.

Burglary: A burglary attempt was reported at a Bradford Court residence. The resident was awakened by a loud noise on Nov. 30 at around 12:32 a.m. She found her door had been kicked in, but was unsure if anyone actually entered her residence.

Entering auto: A Honda Odyssey was entered while parked at a Dubose Street residence. The theft occurred between 8:30 p.m. on Nov. 28 and 10:45 a.m. on Nov. 29. A DVD player and assorted tools valued at $600 were taken.

Entering auto: A Subaru Outback was entered while parked at a Dubose Street residence. The incident occurred between 12:01 a.m. and 10:50 a.m. on Nov. 29. Nothing was taken.

Entering auto:A Mercedes Benz was entered while parked at a Cohen Street residence. The incident occurred between 10:30 p.m. on Nov. 28 and 6:11 p.m. on Nov. 29. Cash, iPod and a phone charger were reported taken; the items were valued at $300.

Entering auto:A Jeep Cherokee was entered while parked at a Windy Hill Court residence. The incident occurred between 8 a.m. on Nov. 28 and 8 a.m. on Nov. 29. A car stereo valued at $50 was taken.

Nov. 29

Armed Robbery: A man was robbed around 5 p.m. on Nov. 28 at 8:44 p.m. at S. Milledge Avenue. $300 in cash was taken.

Burglary: A woman reported her residence on Rolling Ridge Drive was burglarized sometime between 7 p.m. on Nov. 27 and 9 a.m. on Nov. 28. The only item taken was a 22 inch flat screen television valued at $100.

Burglary: A courtesy officer at Ikon Apartments on Barnett Shoals Road found a burglary in the apartment complex. No contact was able to be made with the victims. It is unknown if there were any items taken.

Burglary: A residence on Michele Drive was burglarized sometime between 10 a.m. and 9 p.m. on Nov. 28 and 9 p.m. Items taken were a flat screen television valued at $1,000, a DVD player valued at $100 and 6 pair of kids shoes valued at $150.

Burglary: A residence on Rustwood Drive was burglarized between 11:45 a.m. and 7:30 p.m. on Nov. 28. Items taken were a laptop computer valued at $1,200, a Nintendo game cube valued at $100, 7 Nintendo games valued at $70, a remote control truck valued at $75, $50 worth of quarters, 12 boxes of baseball cards with an unknown value, 6 collectable lunch boxes with an unknown value and a Sony Xbox system with games valued at $200.

Burglary: A residence on Highland Park Drive was burglarized sometime between 1:30 p.m. on Nov. 28 and 1:50 a.m. on Nov. 29. Items taken were 2 42 inch LG flat screen televisions valued at $1,400, a Xbox 360 valued at $250, a Nintendo WII valued at $200, a 17 inch HP notebook computer valued at $700, an Apple IPod valued at $250, assorted Xbox games valued at $300 and a 32-inch LG television valued at $500.

Burglary: A residence on Herman Street was burglarized between 6 p.m. on Nov. 28 and 2:30 a.m. on Nov. 29. Items taken were a Xbox 360 valued at $300, a Kindle book reader valued at $200, 2 Nintendo WII valued at $400, a set of headphones valued at $200, a Dell laptop computer valued at $300, a ACER laptop valued at $300 and 2 Nintendo DS game systems valued at $400.

Stolen vehicle: Between 5 p.m. on Nov. 25 and 8 p.m. on Nov. 27 a Suzuki motorcycle valued at $2,200 was stolen from Benedict Court.

Nov. 28

Burglary: A storage unit on Gaines School Road was burglarized between 6 p.m. on Nov. 23 and 9 p.m. on Nov. 24. Items taken were an air compressor valued at $200, another air compressor valued at $ 500, a nail gun valued at $200, a table saw valued at $450, another saw valued at $200, a tool bag valued at $25 and miscellaneous tools valued at $900.

Burglary: A residence was burglarized on Michele Drive between 7:35 p.m. on Nov. 27 and 1:30 on Nov. 28. Items taken were 12 flat billed collector hats valued at $600 and a Nook E-Reader valued at $200.

Nov. 27

Home invasions/Robberies: The Athens-Clarke County Police and Georgia Bureau of Investigation continue to investigate last week’s home invasions and robberies. Investigators continue to rigorously pursue leads, examine evidence, and conduct interviews in hopes to identify the persons involved in these two separate crimes. We continue to receive calls from our courageous citizens who believe they recognize the person in the sketch or have information that can help investigators. If you have seen something, say something. We continue to encourage citizens to call with information no matter how insignificant it may seem to them. All information is very important to us and police believe that someone has that critical clue to identify the perpetrators and bring this case to a successful conclusion. Police would like to speak with anyone who may live around or visited the Highland Park Drive area around 3 a.m., on Nov. 20 or Cole Manor Drive on Nov. 22 around 6 a.m. Anyone who wishes to provide information relating to these crimes should call 911, Central Communications at 706-546-5900, or the ACCPD Crime Stoppers Tip Line at 706-613-3342. Your Police Department and the GBI continue to devote significant resources toward these crimes. Drug possession: On Nov. 26 members of the Drug Task Force, with assistance from ACCPD’s Vice Unit, Crime Emergency Unit West, and Days West, executed a search warrant at 227 Jasmine Trail the residence of Jermie English. A quantity of marijuana, cocaine, and Roxycontin, as well as digital scales and paraphernalia associated with the distribution of illegal drugs, were seized. Also seized were handguns and cash. While the search was in progress, another individual identified as Perry Poor arrived at the residence. Poor had in his possession a loaded firearm, a quantity of crystal meth, scales, and a smoking device. Poor was arrested and his 1997 Toyota Tacoma was seized and impounded. English was arrested and charged with Possession of Marijuana with Intent to Distribute, Possession of Cocaine with Intent to Distribute, Possession of Schedule II with Intent to Distribute, and Possession of a Firearm During the Commission of a Felony. Poor was charged with Possession of Methamphetamine and Possession of a Firearm During the Commission of a Felony. Further arrests are pending.

Burglary: A Hanover Place residence was burglarized between 4:15 p.m. and 5 p.m. Nov. 26. A TV and laptop with a total value of $830 were stolen.

Burglary: A Maison Drive residence was burglarized between 11 a.m. Nov. 24 and 8:15 p.m. Nov. 26. A TV, video game console, DVDs, video games, laptop, and tattoo equipment were stolen. The total value was $2,950.

Burglary: A vacant Laurel Oaks, 175 Wood Lake Place, residence was burglarized prior to 8:10 p.m. Nov. 26. It is unknown if anything was stolen.

Indecent exposure: The 44-year old victim said she was leaving the Probation Office on Lexington Rd around 11:40 a.m. Nov. 26. An unknown black male approached and asked for a ride. She twice told him no. He pleaded with her to give him a ride because it was cold and raining. She relented and the male entered her vehicle. As they traveled east on Lexington Road, the male exposed himself and touched her leg with his hand. She stopped at the Gaines School Road intersection and told him to get out. After he exited, he walked east bound. The victim called 911 and then met with an officer at Police Headquarters. The suspect was described as 5-foot-2, 130 pounds, in his 20s, with a small afro. He wore a black jacket with gold writing on the sleeves, dark jeans with dirt/ash on the legs, dark knit underwear, and dark tennis shoes. Officers checked the Gaines School Road area but were unable to make contact with the suspect.

Theft by taking: Between 8 a.m. Nov. 13 and 4 p.m. Nov. 26 paint, hardener, and paint guns with a total value of $3,300 were stolen from Georgia Square Collision, 1950 Jimmie Daniel Road. A possible suspect was named.

Nov. 26

Sexual exploitation of a child: The Georgia Bureau of Investigation provided information to the Athens-Clarke County Police Department through the Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force. After an initial investigation by ACCPD and the University of Georgia Police Department, a search warrant was executed at 192 Wendy Lane around 7:30 a.m. Nov. 26. Computers and cell phones were seized and analyzed. As a result of this investigation, Jeffrey Wall Delk, 51, of that address, was arrested and charged with 43 counts of Sexual Exploitation of a Child. The investigation continues and additional charges are possible.

Burglary: A College Station Road storage unit was burglarized between noon Nov. 5 and 3:45 p.m. Nov. 25. Clothing valued at $200 was stolen.

Burglary: A shop building at a Frederick Drive residence was burglarized between 5:30 p.m. Nov. 21 and 3 p.m. Nov. 24. A chain saw, hedge trimmer, leaf blower, propane tanks, and a flowerpot with a total value of $185 were stolen.

Theft by taking: Between 6 a.m. Nov. 11 and 8 p.m. Nov. 25 an air conditioner, light fixtures, doors, beds, a basketball goal, washer, dryer, and lawn mower were stolen from an Aubrey Dr residence. These items were valued at $8,500. A suspect was named.

Nov. 25

Burglary: A Gaines School Road storage unit was burglarized between 6 p.m. Nov. 23 and 9:40 p.m. Nov. 24. Bicycles, guitars, a radio, chair, and shoes with a total value of $1,017 were stolen.

Burglary: A Cumberland Court residence was burglarized between noon Nov. 22 and 6:45 p.m. Nov. 24. A TV, clock, rifle, video game console, and laptop were stolen. The total value was $1,690.

Burglary/Robbery: An officer met with a man at a Sunset Drive residence. He said two subjects know to him gave him a ride to a store around midnight Nov. 25. When they returned about 15 minutes later, he discovered his residence had been burglarized. A TV valued at $250 had been stolen. Shortly after returning home, a former coworker came to his residence with a female he did not know. The first two males then left. He said after being at the residence for a short time, the former coworker grabbed him from behind and slammed him to the floor. As he held him on the floor, the female rummaged through the residence. After they left, he discovered a guitar and cash had been stolen. The value of these items was $1,080.

Nov. 24

Possession with Intent to Distribute Marijuana: Around 7:45 p.m. Nov. 23 officers were searching the area of S Peter Street and Oak Street for suspects involved in a robbery. An officer saw a vehicle on Peter Street and stopped it to identify the occupants. As he talked with the driver, he smelled an odor of marijuana coming from inside the vehicle. He asked the driver to exit and a search of his person revealed a small baggie with marijuana residue in it. The passenger was also asked to exit. A search of his person revealed a digital scale with marijuana residue on it and multiple clear plastic baggies in his pockets. A search of the vehicle revealed a bag under the passenger seat, which contained, among other things, three baggies of suspected marijuana in different quantities. Alvin Batron Jackson, 26, Mineral Springs Drive, was arrested and charged with Possession with Intent to Distribute Marijuana. The driver was release with no charges.

Burglary: A storage building at a W Paces Drive residence was burglarized between 9 p.m. Nov. 22 and 3:30 p.m. Nov. 23. An inflatable jumper valued at $1,000 was stolen. A suspect was named.

Burglary: A Biscayne Drive residence was burglarized between 1:15 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. Nov. 23. A TV, laptop, and jewelry with a total value of $4,300 were stolen.

Robbery: An officer met with a man at a E Broad St residence. He said he and a person known by first name only were walking on E Broad Street. He said they ran into another male who was a friend of his friend. He said his friend asked for cab money and he was then struck in the head. He said he remembered his head hitting the ground but does not remember anything else. He does not know how he got home. He reported his cellphone and cash missing with a total value of $520. A citizen recovered his wallet at a nearby residence. He sustained scrapes to his face, head, and hands but he declined medical attention. This occurred around 3:45 a.m. Nov. 23.

Robbery: A man said he and a friend took a taxi to their Ruth Drive residence. When they arrived around 2 a.m. Nov. 23 his friend walked off. The man said when he tried to pay he realized he had no money. He said the cab driver threatened to shoot him so he handed him his wallet. Later in the day, his friend realized he left his cell phone in the taxi and they went to the business on Martin Luther King, Jr., Parkway, to retrieve it. He saw the driver and he returned his wallet to him. The man also said an unauthorized charge had been made on a credit card during this time. An officer met them at the business. The driver told the officer the man gave him his wallet to hold until he could come back to pay. He also said he did not threaten him or use his credit card. The investigation continues.

Robbery: A man said he was walking to downtown from his Herman Street residence around 7:10 p.m. Nov. 23. He encountered two unknown black males in the area of E Broad and Mulberry Street. They offered to sell him some marijuana and he agreed. To get out of view they moved behind the church at that location. he said the suspects then told him they had cocaine he needed to buy. When he declined, he said they reached in their pockets as if they had weapons. He then gave them his wallet. They removed $100 and threw his wallet to the ground. The suspects walked away. He said he followed for a short distance but stopped and called police. The suspects were approximately 5-foot-10, slim build, with short hair. One suspect wore a black and white plaid long sleeve shirt and jeans. The other wore a red nylon pullover with a “G” on the chest and jeans.

Theft by taking: Between 1 p.m. and 1:20 p.m. Nov. 23 jewelry valued at $1,625 was stolen from Antiques & Jewels, 290 N Milledge Avenue. The suspects were described as a white male and female. The female went upstairs and as the employee was with her, it is believed the male took the jewelry. The female was approximately 5-foot-8, 250 pounds, with shoulder length brown hair and rotten teeth. The male was approximately 5-foot-8, 170 pounds, wearing a ball cap, with a short grey beard.

Nov. 23

Home invasion/Rape: An officer met with the 21-year old victim at Athens Regional Medical Center on Nov. 22. She advised she was visiting a friend at his Cole Manor Drive residence when at approximately 6 a.m. there was a knock on the door. The resident opened the door and three armed men burst in. She was taken upstairs, forced to perform sodomy, and then raped at gunpoint. Two of the suspects were described as black males, around 5-foot-8 to 5-foot-9, armed with handguns. One had light skin with bad acne, dread locks or braids, a moustache and small beard or goatee, with a muscular build. The second suspect had dark skin, was heavy set, and wore a black ski mask and red hoodie. There was no description given of the suspect who remained downstairs other than he had a “long gun” which was possibly a shotgun. Anyone with any information is asked to contact Det. Hamilton at 706-613-3888 X292 or the Crime Stoppers Tip Line at 706-613-3342. Crime Stoppers is offering a reward of up to $5,000 for the arrest and conviction of these perpetrators.

Drug possession: Members of the Drug Task Force coordinated with the State Board of Pardons and Parole to conduct a Fourth Amendment waiver search at 115 Bach Drive residence of Quinton Deon Riden. Cash, a quantity of cocaine, and drug paraphernalia were seized. A stolen handgun was also recovered. Riden was arrested on the parole violations. Additional charges are pending.

Burglary: An 8-year old victim said she was asleep with her mother at their Hanover Place residence. Between 7 a.m. and 8 a.m. Nov. 21 she heard footsteps in the living room. When she looked up, she saw a skinny black male wearing a white coat and blue jeans standing in the door way. When the child woke her mom, the suspect ran out the front door, which was unlocked. The report did not specific if the door had been left unlocked by the resident or was unlocked by the suspect. Nothing was taken.

Burglary: Between 11:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. Nov. 21 a Big Oak Cir residence was burglarized. A TV, tablet, cell phone, jewelry, and jar of change were stolen. The total value was $938.

Burglary: A storage shed at a E Broad Street residence was burglarized between midnight Nov. 7 and 5 p.m. Nov. 21. Nothing is known missing at this time.

Burglary: A Fourth Street residence was burglarized between 5:30 p.m. and 9 p.m. Nov. 21. A game console, laptop, and tablet with a total value of $2,000 were stolen.

Rape: The 23-year old victim said she and some friends had been downtown on the evening of Nov. 21. Afterward, they went to her friend’s west side residence. There was male in the group who was a friend of their friend but was unknown to her. Around 6:30 a.m. Nov. 22 she was awakened by that male assaulting her. She stopped him and he left the residence. The investigation continues.

Nov. 23

Possession of a Weapon During the Commission of a Crime: An officer was at Oak Hill Apartments, 105 Oak Hill Drive, when he saw a vehicle enter the parking lot and go to the back of one of the buildings. The passenger exited and went in one of the apartments for just a few minutes. He returned to the vehicle and the driver pulled away. A computer check of the tag indicated there was no insurance on the vehicle. A traffic stop was made on Old Hull Rd and North Ave. The officer identified the driver by his license. As the officer talked with the passenger he smelled a faint odor of burnt marijuana. The passenger, Derrick Gillespie, told him the subjects in the apartment were smoking marijuana. The officer asked him to exit the vehicle so he could search him. As the officer started the search, Gillespie became jumpy. When the officer reached toward the front of his body, Gillespie started to twist away. He then told the officer he had a gun. The gun was removed from his waistband and he was handcuffed. The search continued and a large, white rock substance was found in his jacket pocket. A field test of the substance was positive for cocaine. The driver and vehicle were also searched. No other contraband was found and he was allowed to leave after being cited for No Insurance. Gillespie, 30, Monty Drive, was charged with Possession of a Weapon During the Commission of a Crime, Carrying a Concealed Weapon, Possession with Intent to Distribute Cocaine, and Drug Offense within 1,000-foot of a School.

Attempted Aggravated Assault: Around 3:10 p.m. Nov. 23 and officer met with a woman at Athens Regional Medical Center. She said around 6:30 p.m. Nov. 22 she and her boyfriend had an argument at their N Bluff Road residence. The offender grabbed her by the throat and pushed her against the cabinets. He then picked her up and slammed her onto the floor causing her to momentarily black out. When she came to, she went to the door in an attempt to leave. The offender stopped her so she went to the bedroom. Around 3:30 a.m. she again tried to leave but the offender pulled back into the residence by her hair. A struggle ensued and after several minutes, She was able to break free and run out of the residence. As she ran to her vehicle, the offender chased her with an ax. Officers went to the residence and made contact with the offender, Johnathan Scye McCollum, 32. He was arrested and charged with Attempted Aggravated Assault, Battery, and False Imprisonment under the Family Violence Act.

Nov. 21

Aggravated battery: Athens-Clarke County Police are continuing to investigate the Nov. 20 armed robbery and aggravated battery that occurred on Highland Park Drive. ACCPD detectives are requesting that anyone with information regarding this case call Detective Hamilton at 706-613-3888 X292 or the Crime Stoppers Tip Line at 706-613-3342. The masked perpetrators were described as three black males with dreads and wearing all black clothing. Crime Stoppers is offering a reward of up to $1,000 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the perpetrators.

Burglary: Around 10:45 a.m. Nov. 20 officers responded to a complaint of suspicious persons in the 100 block of Live Oak Drive. The first officer to arrive approached the residence on foot and saw two subjects behind the residence carrying objects. The subjects were detained for investigative purposes. Investigation revealed a Tallassee Road residence, which was through a wooded area behind the Live Oak residence was burglarized. The owner responded and advised a riding lawn mower, doorknob set, shoes, handbag, cellphone, and two-cycle oil had been stolen. These items were recovered behind the Live Oak Drive residence where the suspects were detained. Amy Michelle Floyd, 33, Lavista Road, and Tyler Harris Hairston, 35, Settler’s Pass, were arrested and charged with Burglary. Floyd was also charged with Giving False Information as she gave a false name when officers first made contact with her.

Attempted burglary: An attempt was made to burglarize an Ashmore Court residence between 9 a.m. and 10:50 a.m. Nov. 20.

Burglary: Between 12:01 a.m. and 2:30 a.m. Nov. 20 an E Broad Street residence was burglarized. $20 and $530 were stolen from a purse. A suspect was named.

Burglary: A Parkview Homes residence was burglarized between 10:30 a.m. and 8:15 p.m. Nov. 20. A TV valued at $350 was stolen.

Battery: An officer met with a woman of Vine Street at a Nellie B Avenue residence around 3 p.m. Nov. 20. She said on Nov. 18 around 8 a.m. she was at a Vine Street residence. She was arguing with a person known. During that time, she said he took her arm and placed it on a heated stovetop burner. EMS responded to the Nellie B address and transported her to Athens Regional Medical Center for treatment. The investigation continues.

Nov. 20

Accident with death: A man was backing his 2992 Toyota Echo from the driveway of his N Peter Street residence around 1:45 p.m. Nov. 19. Yong Nam, 23, of Arch Street, riding a 2008 Suzuki 600, was south bound on Peter Street. As the vehicle entered the roadway, the Nam vehicle struck the back of the vehicle. Nam was ejected from the motorcycle. He was transported to Athens Regional Medical Center where he died. No citations have been issued pending completion of the investigation.

Burglary: Around 2 a.m. Nov. 20 three armed, masked men forcibly entered the Highland Park Drive residence. The suspects forced she into a bathroom and detained her there. A man was bound and beaten. They said the suspects demanded money several times while in the residence. The man sustained facial injuries and burns to his body. He was transported to a local hospital. The suspects were described only as wearing masks and dark clothing. The investigation continues.

Burglary: Between 10 p.m. and 10:15 p.m. Nov. 18 Heirloom Cafe, 815 N Chase Street, was burglarized. Cash drawers and cash with a total value of $500 were stolen.

Burglary: A west side residence was burglarized between 5 p.m. and 10:30 p.m. Nov. 19. A TV, video game system, video games, and cash were stolen. The total value was $631.

Burglary: A Cross Creek Drive residence was burglarized between 11 a.m. and 10:15 p.m. Nov. 19. A video game system, video controller, cable, video game, headset, TV, and laptops were stolen. The total value was $1,100.

Theft by extortion: The owner of Los Compadres 2, 395 Old Commerce Road, advised she received a call on Nov. 17 from a person who advised unless she made an immediate payment of $1,000 the electricity would be cut off. She was instructed to purchase two money cards for $500 each. After the purchase, she was to call a number and give them the PIN. She complied fearing the electricity would be cut off. Around 11 a.m. Nov. 19 she received another call from the same person who advised the funds could not be collected from one of the cards. She was instructed to buy a third card. She became suspicious and called the electric company. They advised they were not involved with the company who called. Citizens are reminded to check the status of their account with their utility company before sending payment to unknown callers. Protect your identity - never give out personal information (Social Security numbers, bank account and credit/debit card numbers, date of birth, etc.) about yourself or family members to unknown persons over the phone. Financial institutions will have this information on file – you will not need to “confirm” it for them over the phone.

Nov. 19

Burglary: Around 1 p.m. Nov. 18 officers responded to a burglary that had just occurred at Rugged Wearhouse, 3658 Atlanta Hwy. The manager advised the suspect entered the office and attempted to open the locked safe. When he was unable to do, he left the store and entered a Chevrolet Suburban. A lookout out issued for the suspect and vehicle. A short time later, Oconee County deputies located the suspect and vehicle off Epps Bridge Parkway. The suspect was taken into custody. After questioning, Charles William Smith, 58, Dacula, was arrested and charged with Burglary and Possession of Tools – Burglary.

Burglary: Officers responded to a complaint of a drug transaction in progress in the area of Epps Bridge Road and Atlanta Highway around 11:55 p.m. Nov. 18. A responding officer saw the vehicle turn into Rac Trac at Epps Bridge Road and quickly exit the lot. The driver then pulled into the lot at Sam’s Food Mart on the Atlanta Hwy. Officers pulled in, stopped behind the vehicle, and approached from both sides. When the driver rolled his window down, an odor of marijuana emanated from the vehicle. At that time, a back seat passenger started to reach under his leg. Not knowing if he was reaching for a weapon, the officer opened the back door. As he did so, the passenger lunged toward the front of the vehicle. The officer then saw a plastic zip-lock type bag containing a green leafy material. He grabbed the passenger, pulled him from the vehicle, and handcuffed him. The other occupants were also removed from the vehicle. A small bottle containing suspected marijuana was also found in the vehicle. Brandon Odarious Barnett, 20, Broad Acres Court, was arrested and charged with Possession with Intent to Distribute Marijuana and Obstruction. It was determined Barnett and Rodraous Obrian Lawrence, 27, Cavalier Court, had outstanding warrants and they were served with those. The third occupant was not charged and was released.

Aggravated assault: An officer met with a man at Athens Regional Medical Center around 10:30 p.m. Nov. 18. He said he was at a Kim Chase Road residence around 4:20 p.m. He went over to another Kim Chase Road location and he and a male known only by a first name had an exchange of words. He said the male picked up a piece of wood and threatened him so he hit him first. He said the suspect then hit him with the piece of wood and he passed out. Another person helped him back to the original Kim Chase location and his mother transported him to the hospital. He sustained a laceration near his eye. He did not wish to press charges.

Attempted burglary: An attempt to burglarized Simpson Chiropractic, 700 Hawthorne Ave, was made between 5 p.m. Nov. 15 and 12:45 p.m. Nov. 16. This was reported on Nov. 18.

Attempted burglary: Two people were asleep when someone began kicking the back door of their Lake Place residence around 3 a.m. Nov. 19. When the alarm when off, the kicking stopped.

Burglary: Between 7 p.m. Nov. 16 and 9 a.m. Nov. 18 vacant Sir Matthew Road residences were burglarized. Copper wiring valued at $700 was stolen and walls and insulation valued at $1,100 were damaged.

Burglary: A Deer Park Drive residence was burglarized between 8:30 p.m. Nov. 17 and 10:30 p.m. Nov. 18. An iPhone, cellphone, and iPad were stolen. The total value was $954.

Burglary: A W Broad Street residence was burglarized between 3 p.m. Nov. 17 and 3:30 p.m. Nov. 18. A guitar and video game system with a total value of $850 were stolen.

Burglary: Between 10:05 a.m. and 3:10 p.m. Nov. 18 a Rocksprings Court residence was burglarized. Video game systems, video games, a jump drive, and a TV were stolen. The total value was $1,451.

Theft by taking: Between midnight and 6 a.m. Nov. 18 catalytic converters valued at $50 were stolen from vehicles owned by the Unified Government of Athens-Clarke County. The vehicles were parked on W Dougherty Street.
