Orthokeratology

Orthokeratology is a non-surgical method of temporarily reshaping the cornea of the eye using specially designed contact lenses. The goal of orthokeratology is to reduce, control, or slow the progression of myopia (nearsightedness) or astigmatism. The lenses used in orthokeratology are either rigid, gas-permeable lenses or special daily replaceable soft contact lenses such as the overnight therapeutic lenses ACUVUE Abiliti and CooperVision MiSight.
The process involves the patient wearing these specially designed lenses while they sleep or during the day. And the lenses intended for daytime wear also offer vision correction. The lenses gently reshape the cornea, and upon waking, the patient can remove the lenses and experience improved vision without the need for glasses or contact lenses during the day. The effects of orthokeratology are temporary, so the lenses need to be worn regularly, typically every night, to maintain the corrected vision.
Orthokeratology is sometimes referred to as corneal reshaping therapy. It is becoming a popular option for adults to achieve freedom from daytime vision correction and for children to slow the progression of childhood myopia. Good candidates for Ortho-K are:
- Children between the ages of eight and 14 with progressive myopia.
- Adults with low to mild nearsightedness.
- Patients with low to moderate astigmatism.
