Not a webcam yet not quite an action cam either, Logitech’s Mevo Start video camera instead seeks to pull from both. By allowing users to live stream entirely remotely as well as wirelessly, the Mevo Start sets itself apart from most webcams and action cameras by offering access to virtually any platform they want so long as there is a stable internet connection.

While this fusion doesn’t quite hit the same marks as either a high-end professional webcam or action camera, the Mevo Start does offer some incredible quality benefits while at a price that makes it impossible to ignore, especially for startup streamers and DJ live streamers looking for the best DJ accessories.

We’ll go in-depth with the video camera to see if it’s worth your time as a user or if you’re better off investing in a dedicated webcam for your live streaming and broadcasting needs.

Is The Mevo Start any good?

Absolutely! The Logitech Mevo Start is a great tool for anyone looking to create high-quality live streams. Whether you’re a live stream DJ, content creator, social media influencer, or just someone who wants to share their experiences with the world, the Mevo Start delivers professional quality video and has everything you need to create engaging, professional-looking live streams.

Mevo Start: First Impressions

In terms of first impressions, the Mevo Start comes across as a camera that you’d expect to be part of the Logitech world.

Both, from what it offers as well as how it looks directly out of the box, if you’d told me that it was solely a webcam (albeit a larger one) I’d have believed you. It doesn’t look like anything you’d really take off and video record with outside of your computer.

General Build

Immediately, the first thing you’ll pick up is that this wireless live-streaming camera is fairly compact, but BIGGER than. a webcam. As mentioned, while it doesn’t come across as anything especially different from a webcam in overall design, its size is something you’re going to pick up on. It measures out at 3.4 x 1.3 x 2.9 inches while weighing in at around 8.1 ounces.

This makes the Logitech Mevo start camera bigger than a webcam while also much smaller than your standard DSLR camera.

Something that immediately stuck out to me was that, despite its size and shape, there weren’t any buttons or switches to press that would otherwise be there with the exception of the power button.

Things like a manual zoom-in or out weren’t there, nor were there any options to move the image along either side. Instead, it looks like everything you do is going to be through one of the different phone apps available.

Specifications

The Mevo Start is a wireless connection-type camera with an image resolution of 2.07 megapixels. It has a 1080p video resolution of 30 frames per second, while its still image resolution sits at 1920×1080.

The camera has image quality setting customization available with a fixed focus type and an 83.7-degree field of view.

In terms of connectivity, the Mevo Start offers 802.11 AC at 2.4 GHz/5Ghz while also using Bluetooth 4.1. The camera has a video codec of H.264 and HEVC that records up to 1080p.

Rear Side

At its rear, the Mevo Start has a power button while also having a MicroSD card slot, a USB-C charging port, and a 3.5mm TRS audio input port. For those that aren’t interested in using the specially designated mic, the Mevo Start comes with three holes on its top that operate as an inbuilt microphone.

Underside

On the camera’s underside, the Mevo Start has a standard-sized thread that’s used for mounting over a tripod as well as a boom arm. These aren’t included, however, it’s certainly good that they’re already included.

Light Indicators

One thing I found was that there were a surprising number of lights on this camera. So, I decided to take action and list them out. The first one is a light indicator that’s on the front. This light will change from red to green whenever it’s recording. There are also four lights on its rear that are used to determine its battery level, with all four lights indicating a full battery and only one light meaning that the battery needs to be charged.

A Deeper Look

As I’ve been an avid fan of Logitech for a while now, it was no surprise for me just how impressive the Mevo Start would ultimately be.

As with most of their other devices, I found that, rather than excelling in resolution or even refresh rate, the Mevo Start instead emphasized its different features and software uses, allowing it to be paired with a variety of different cameras, switching out between them while streaming or broadcasting, all through the use of one of its mobile apps.

Mobile Apps

Speaking of mobile apps, the Mevo Start has three different apps available, though you often only need to use one. The first is the Logitech Mevo App while the second is their Mevo Multicam app. Lastly, there is a Mevo mic app.

They can all be found available both for iOS as well as Android, meaning that pretty much any smartphone has access to it.

The Logitech Mevo App is considered the standard of the three and allows users to control the camera’s basic functions directly via their phone. Some of these functions include the camera’s exposure, shutter speed, as well as white balance. It also comes with some different presets to make the recording quality better based on the environment and situation. It comes with HDR mode as well as a couple of filters that can be applied over any footage to give it a new or a different look.

They are able to see the live feed while also having a list of different places that can be used for streaming (Twitch, YouTube, Facebook, etc.) so long as the accounts are already connected and there is stable wireless internet present.

If there’s ever a need to zoom in, the Mevo app can do mid-stream zooms, though it can’t keep zooming in all the way and also does a fair bit of quality since it is a digital zoom rather than an optical one.

The Logitech Mevo Multicam works a bit differently. Here, as the name implies, it helps you operate multiple Mevo cameras at once. This makes it a great option for those that plan on streaming from multiple angles or at large events where one camera just isn’t going to cut it. The app allows you to essentially jump from one camera to the next, focusing on any angle you want at any time you want. This basically allows you to run an otherwise small team’s worth of cameras entirely by yourself, especially once you get the hang of using the Mevo and the Multicam apps in tandem with one another.

The Mevo Mic App is specifically meant as an effective alternative to the audio from your camera. If you don’t like the sound from the Mevo Start, a person can use this app and the phone’s own built-in microphones instead. This is especially important for instances where you need a closer sound that may not be possible due to the distance of the Mevo Start.

Microphone

The Mevo Start’s microphone situation is a bit interesting. They wanted to focus on giving a solid camera experience while at a super-affordable rate but also realized that they needed some type of microphone option that works. As a result, while it isn’t “terrible”, I don’t have a ton of great things to say about the mic.

Pretty much, it’s only going to be really good when you’re in a very small and enclosed space that also doesn’t have an echo.

Using the Mevo app, you’ve got a few different controls you can use, with some affecting volume while others allowing you to optimize better for windy or music-filled locations where the sound may be muddled.

There’s also a manual Audio Gain Control that can be toggled to keep the audio levels as consistent as possible without suffering too many peaks.

These all sound great, and I’ve got to hand it to them in terms of the different options they offer through the app. However, it’s difficult to really get behind any of these inclusions when the microphone itself leaves much to be desired.

Honestly, you’re just better off getting your own dedicated mic if you don’t want to sound super far away or have to work like crazy to get a halfway decent sound.

Webcam & Camera Modes

When it comes to the Mevo Start’s ability to webcam, again, it’s important that it’s not going to be on the level of some of the higher-quality dedicated webcams that are out there, even by Logitech. That said, I wasn’t too disappointed by what it gave me. Some of the test images were solid while the sensors worked fairly well even in dimmer lighting. The process for taking photos simply requires you to use the Mevo app and switch over from Wired Webcam mode to camera mode.

Battery Life

Battery life and cameras have always had a murky relationship with one another, especially when they can’t be charged while being used. That’s kind of the situation here, as the Mevo Start doesn’t really charge unless it’s been powered off.

I’m going to go out on a limb and say that this is due to it likely needing more power being fed into it by connecting to your app and the computer than is being fed into it by the computer, but that could also be entirely off.

What you need to know is that you shouldn’t expect any sort of extension on the battery life once you boot the camera up and start using it.

Depending on how much streaming and broadcasting you’re apt to do, this may or may not be entirely fine. That’s because the Mevo Start is reported to have roughly right around six hours’ worth of charge before dying out.

That’s fairly close to what I managed to get, as things only clocked out with me at five hours and 40 minutes. Yeah, that’s a 20-minute difference, but it’s close enough that, at the 5-hour and 30-minute mark, you should be about ready to wrap things up.

This is why I said it depends on how long you plan to live stream.

If you’re only streaming for three or four hours, there are not going to be any issues. On the other hand, if you plan to stream for five, seven, or even 10 or 12 hours, you’re either going to need a different kind of camera or a backup Mevo Start to cut on when the first one dies out.

You also have to be away that, after around 20 minutes, the camera does start to run pretty hotly. It’s not going to “melt” or degrade anything, but it’s worth being aware of all the same.

Mevo Start: The Verdict

Overall, the Mevo Start is kind of stuck between a rock and a hard place, and that makes it difficult for a 100% definitive thumbs up or down. On the one hand, the camera is legitimately a great camera.

When you tie it in with the other apps and are using it like it’s supposed to, you can get a lot of things done with this. It’s not going to give you that top-tier 4k resolution, but it’s also only going for $350, so it’s not like you should necessarily expect 4k quality.

Whether you’re using only one camera or are planning to invest in a batch of three, you can pretty much do anything most Twitch streamers or YouTube video content creators do without any additional materials.

And for that it’s awesome…

However, some of the challenges start to come in when we start talking about exactly what you need.

All in all, I think the best way to put the Mevo Start is that, if you are looking for awesome DJ accessories to hugely benefit your DJ live streaming, the Mevo Start is a fantastic option.

On the other hand, if you’re willing to look around for something that’s a bit more specialized to your specific streaming or broadcasting needs, you may want to spend your time looking elsewhere.
