Mean Green Juice Recipes - My Juice Cleanse (1)

You’ve been asking for it and here it is! The Mean Green Juice recipe featured in the documentary “Fat, Sick, and Nearly Dead” was created by Joe Cross himself as part of his juice fast journey.

The documentary film follows Joe Cross, an overweight and unhealthy Australian man, as he embarks on a life-changing mission to regain his health. Joe is suffering from a debilitating autoimmune disease and is also significantly overweight. Frustrated with his health and dependent on medications, Joe decides to take control of his life and embark on a radical 60-day juice fast.

During his travels across the United States, Joe Cross met a truck driver named Phil Staples, who was also struggling with weight and health issues. Joe introduced Phil to juicing and shared his own experiences with the Mean Green Juice.

The documentary explores the transformative power of juicing and plant-based nutrition as Joe and Phil go through the juice fast together. They document their progress, showing the physical and mental changes they experience while consuming only fresh fruit and vegetable juices.

Mean Green Juice Recipes - My Juice Cleanse (2)

The Mean Green Juice recipe is a combination of various green vegetables and fruits known for their nutritional properties. The exact recipe may vary slightly, but it typically includes ingredients like kale, spinach, cucumber, celery, green apples, ginger, and lemon. These ingredients are juiced together to produce a vibrant green juice that is rich in vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants.

The popularity of the Mean Green Juice recipe extended beyond the documentary. It has since become a popular juice recipe for individuals looking to jumpstart their health or incorporate more fruits and vegetables into their diets.

Joe’s personal success story led to the establishment of rebootwithjoe.com, a platform designed to inspire and educate others about the benefits of incorporating plant-based nutrition into their lives. The Mean Green Juice, a testament to the healing power of whole foods, continues to symbolize Joe’s dedication to promoting health and vitality through his advocacy and online community.

Why Green Juice

The Mean Green Juice became so popular because of the many benefits it offers the body. The juice of green fruits and vegetables helps to cleanse the blood and provides many of the nutrients our bodies need to function at optimal levels. By juicing greens, a person is able to consume twice as much or more than eating alone, therefore more nutrition is delivered to the body.

Typically the guidelines for making green juice is 60% dark green leafy vegetables and 40% other vegetables/fruits. You can try variations of any of the green recipes until you find one that suits your needs and tastes.

Do you want to try a juice cleanse like Joe Cross? When fasting with juice it is wise to drink four to six glasses (16-20 ounces each) per day. If you are making a whole day’s worth of juice at one time, keep the extra juice in a tightly sealed container in the fridge. Here are some recipes to get you started. (If you like the recipes please share them by “liking” this page!)

The Recipes

I’ve created a few variations of the classic mean green juice recipe made popular by Joe Cross in the movie Fat, Sick, and Nearly Dead. Try them using your favorite juicer.

  1. Hi there- I’m hoping you might be able to help me with a question. I read online that you shouldn’t combine fruit and veggies when juicing. The only exception being apples. Why is this exactly?

For instance, I made a juice that had fruit in it, but I also added a carrot, greens and a cucumber. Is that bad?

    1. Hi Ali. First of all there is one school of thought regarding food combining that says fruits and vegetables should never be combined-juice, raw, or cooked. It has something to do with metabolic processes and different enzymes used to break down the two types of foods. I personally don’t know anyone who follows that rule. As far as juicing goes, fruits do travel through your system faster creating a more rapid detoxification. Fruits contain sugar and of course most people like the taste of them better so it is easy to overdo it. I like the balanced approach 60/40 vegetables to fruits. Hope this helps.

    2. Can you juice for the week and freeze

  2. I need help in choosing a juicer. I’m willing to spend enough for quality that will last so I don’t have to buy another one. Want one that’s easy to clean and easy to use. I’m really inspired by the movie… I believe this is what I’ve been looking for.
    Thank you

    1. Hi Wayne. Congratulations on beginning to juice! One of the most popular and highly rated brands is Breville. Joe Cross used one in his movie. I also own one and love it! I have links to the Breville on this site. Juicers with a wide chute at the top will juice a small apple without having to cut it. That’s easy! And most juicers have parts that can be washed in the dishwasher. Check out Amazon for the best rated juicers in your price range and you’ll be set. Have fun!

      1. WHAT ABOUT THE VITAMIX FOR JUICING?

        1. The Vitamix will blend to a smooth consistency but does not “juice” because the fiber remains. That’s the biggest difference. When you juice, you remove the fiber and it is more easily absorbed by the body dirrectly into the bloodstream. Both are great ways of getting nutrients but for different reasons. Hope this helps!

          1. Hi I was told that when you juice fast all the extra stuff that gets left behind in the juicer is actually whats really good for you and that has a lot of fiber that you should have I was just wondering if that was true and is there any juicers that keep all that in but still makes juice or can i drink the juice and eat the stuff that’s left behind in the juicer also?

          2. I would like to use my blender may I because ,,,I do want the fiber .WHAT CAN I ADD TO MAKE IT A SMOOTHY ?

    2. The Breville Juicer while being popular is an centrifugal juicer and runs at a very high RPM and can cause Oxidation of the foods you are juicing ruining the detoxification properties of the juice. The Masticating Juicers like the Omega VRT 350HD and VRT 330HD just at a slow 80 RPM and crush the foods to release the juice therefore preserving more of the nutrients and having a 20 – 30 percent higher yield of juice. 3. champion juicer all the way, it will last you a lifetime, i have been using one for 21 years now and it still works like new!!

      1. I just bought an Omega 8004. Wonderful machine, easy to clean, juices everything, dry pulp, which I feed to my horses. Everyone is healthier!

  3. In Joe’s documentary, he mentioned he has a more fruit dominate one for the morning then has a more vegetable dominate juice for the rest of the day. I was wondering if the breakfast one was one of these or if there’s a place where I can find the recipe? Thankyouuuuu!

    1. Brittany I don’t know Joe’s breakfast recipe, but you may add more fruit occassionally to the Mean Green Recipe. Try adding grapes or oranges.

    2. The breakfast one I use from the website is 2 pears, 1 apple and half size thumb ginger. I love this drink. If you can’t handle the ginger for whatever reasons, it’s still quite good without it.

  4. hey, inspired! The movie “Fat, Sick & Nearly Dead,” what brand of Juicer was being used by Joe Cross and Phill? Thank you!

    1. Manuel the juicer is a Breville.

  5. Interested in finding a group in Orlando. Just saw documentary. Is it really that expensive?

    1. We shop the farmers market in Holiday Florida “Tommy’s” They have a sale paper every week and we really save a ton of money shopping local..Granny smith apples ((Cents a pound,Cucumbers 5 for 2.50,Ginger root 149 a pound..I mean Come on find the deals and Save your life..We are on day 3 and we feel great….

      1. I’m not in Orlando, but far away in Key West. However, looking at the film, it appears that what they’re spending is not very much different than we’re spending already. We aren’t juicing (but are about to start), but we are already pretty much eating those foods in the same proportion so we expect to transition easily to this.

However, since we’re already around 98% organic, I can’t imagine this being any more expensive. Plus we live in a very expensive area, and the prices in the film still didn’t seem outrageous to me.

  6. So I just recently watched the documentary (fat, sick, and nearly dead), and I was amazed to how eating so healthy can literally heal your illnesses. So I guess you can say I was a bit “inspired”. I’m 21, physically active, eat somewhat healthy, and overall in pretty good shape. The only thing that pretty much counteracts all that is the fact the I smoke cigarettes.

So I’m a little short for funds at the moment, but when I get another part time job, I’m planning on trying a juice cleanse to hopefully stop smoking. Not to mention I get to eat more vegies (I love vegies and fruit).

So do you think this could be a successful venture?

    1. Hi! I wanted to tell you of my experience with quitting cigarettes. I had a 2pack a day Marlboro habit, plus I worked in a restaurant and bar before smoking in restaurants was banned, so lots of second hand smoke. One day I woke up and started coughing so badly I thought I was hacking up a lung and I got scared. I threw out a new pack that I had just opened and headed out to the health food store, bought a 50 pound bag of organic carrots and started juicing like crazy! I got out of the restaurant environment and redirected my thinking, and I never looked back. I had been smoking for ten years, but my program worked, and I never picked up another cigarette. I didn’t have cravings, but some repeating dreams where I would see my hands pick up and light a cigarette, smoke it and put it out, then I would wake in a panic thinking I had smoked and relieved to find out it was only a dream. Eventually, even the dreams no longer had a hold on me. That was all 35 plus years ago. You will have an easier time of it than I did, because today smoke free environments are the norm. Best to you on your journey, and wishing you success. You can do it. Hope this helps.

  7. so drink any of these wonderful juices lol 3x a day for 60days.

can u drink it more then 3x a day say if you’re hungry ?

    1. Hey Nina, go to Joe’s FAQ video series. He talks about this in one of the FAQs, but they are all very much worth watching. I went through them all and it took me about 10 minutes. He does say there that if you should listen to your body. If you want more juice, go for it.

    re:
Nicole I live in Apopka, Fl just North of Orlando. Would love to do the 60 day fast. WE can be Fast support buddies if you want??? I have tried this before but only for a week, I am going the mile this time! Joe & Phil have inspired me!

    1. i live in deltona..where do you all get your veggies?!

  9. I just came across Fat, Sick and Nearly Dead, and I was very inspired. I think this is just the thing I need to turn myself around, but I have no idea where to start and I dont have a whole lot of money, I seen on the show that it casts $15 a day, is that true no matter what size you are???

  10. Can u drink the juice more Than 3x a day?!?

    1. I want to start this fast & do it right for a full 60 days i have been on Suboxone for almost 7 years tapering slowly i am now down to 2.5mg/day + 3mg of Klonopin at night i have gained weight due to diet and lack of exercise i used to be an athlete 6ft 2″ and 179lbs now i weigh 245lbs i produce music for a living so i basically sit all day dose anyone have experience doing this type of juice fast while on Suboxone (or similar opiate replacement therapy) i am healthy otherwise recently had a physical and everything checks out i don’t take any other medications i am in my early 30’s with no history of heart disease or other illnesses i eat a lot of fruit and veg’s never eat fast food but most likely consume too many calories + my lack of exercise and i drink one of those 16oz Starbucks coffee + energy drinks every morning i know it will be hard withdrawing from the caffeine however it’s not really comparable to the true hell of opiate withdrawal which i know all to well dose anyone think i should wait until i am off the med’s to control my opiate addiction before starting this? or should i go for it now and be healthier along with tapering of my other med’s? soon i will no longer need these medications yet it’s necessary to taper slowly so that i don’t get sick. personally i think the fast/diet will only help me with both the weight as well as allowing me to be healthy in order to finish my 2nd goal. (tapering off the med’s i used to get my addiction under control something i will always need to be vigilant and aware of yet i feel i no longer need physiologically + physically 3 months and i should be off both completely. what do you folks think?

      1. Lee, I don’t know the answer to your questions but just want to say congratulations on battling the opiate addiction and now considering even more ways to get and stay healthy. Way. To. Go! Good luck with this fast and making the other changes you want to make. one thing Joe made clear in the documentary was to check with your doctor to make sure you don’t have other physical issues going on you don’t know about before starting. You should definitely talk to your doctor about the fast and your suboxone usage. Better to be healthy, slimmer, more active AND continue the suboxone than to stop the prescription before you should. If you can beat opiates buddy you can beat any other challenge life has to hand you. Best of Luck~

  11. Recipe 1- absolutely delicious!!! Was skeptical about flavor but excellent taste!! Documentary was awesome. Am a runner myself so looking forward to seeing any benefits on performance. Will keep u posted

  12. I watched Sick, Fat and Nearly Dead last night, then went on Craigslist and found a juicer. Picked it up this morning and have started juicing. However, I’ve been reading online and some say that the centrifugal-type juicer that I bought is not healthy to use. Do I need to have a gear-type juicer in order to experience any benefits from juicing?

    1. I use a centrifugal juicer and I love it! Don’t let other people’s opinions bring you down! You can always buy a masticating (gear) juicer in the future. You’re starting a healthy journey – keep going!

    2. There is no such thing as an unhealthy juicer per se.

In general there are two basic types of juicers… centrifugal juicers and masticating juicers.

Centrifugal juicers, like the Breville, use a high RPM spinning strainer that grinds the plant into small pieces. Those small pieces move to the edge of the strainer by centrifugal force, and the juice is extracted by pressure.

Masticating juicers, don’t require the high RPMs, but use an auger to crush the plant to extract the juice.

In my opinion, after having owned both types of juicers, I definitely think the masticating juicers are best. In stores that make fresh juice, you’ll notice they are most often the masticating type. The masticating juicers create a higher juice yield over the centrigual juicers, and there’s very little oxidation because the auger doesn’t need to spin at high speeds to be effective.

A great juicer to consider is the Omega VRT350. You’ll pay for it, but you’ll get your money’s worth. Check out the reviews on Amazon.

  13. The reason why you’ll find comments with regards to not mixing your fruits with vegetables is the reaction to foods once it hits the stomach. Most fruits, alone are considered akaline, however, when eating them with vegetables or mixing some fruits with others they become acidic in the stomach which raises blood glucose. Most people think of lemons and oranges as acidic, but they aren’t unless you mix them with something else. Lemons and oranges are on the akaline index.

    1. Let’s be clear here, foods don’t just magically change their ph levels. Lemons and oranges are acidic. If your body processes lemon in such a way that the the contents of your stomach are less acidic, that is a different matter. But a ph strip on lemon or most other fruits will still show an acid. Ask anyone who’s ever done canning! Better to be precise and not confuse people. 🙂

  14. Is there some sort of support site,I seen the movie with the wife is she disagrees that I would need slot more protien and meats

    1. Protein is deceiving, so many forget that many things you eat give you protein. I have been doing vegetarian for a year now and have zero issues with lack of protein. (it is a huge misconception)

I am not a doctor or nutritionist but I am quite sure with the amount of varied veggies and fruits you’ll ingest you should be fine.

Worst case you could just research which veggies have the most protein and just try and make sure you get those into your juices for piece of mind.

As what most would say if you got to a point you felt odd, or strange or anything negative that is what the doctor is for =)

    2. With all due respect, you’re wife doesn’t understand some real truths behind proper nutrition. To a bigger picture, few people do. A family member of mine is a nurse, and despite being a medical professional, has very little knowledge or proper nutrition as it’s not subject taught much in medical school.

      Check out the following movies:
      Forks Over Knives
The Last Heart Attack – CNN
      Food Matters
      Fat, Sick, and Nearly Dead
      The Incredible Human Machine

      They’re all on Netflix.

      1. Agree, Ron. I know a few nurse practitioners who eat nothing but garbage and have BP through the roof. The reality is that medical people have almost no training in nutrition, unless it’s their specialty. All of those years in medical school and most doctors don’t even have 20 hours in nutrition. Nurses are even less. They concentrate on treating symptoms with drugs from their good buddies at Big Pharma.

To illustrate, of the 3 doctors I have used here are all grossly overweight. One died a few months ago from it. And what’s a joke is that one of them actually hawks a ‘diet plan’ which is nothing but expensive shakes and pre-packaged, processed food.

Do your own research. You are responsible for you because the medical profession in general, doesn’t care about your wellness since it hurts their bottom line.

I also suggest reading something about the QUALITY of the food you eat. Corn in the US (unless it’s organic) is legally classified now as a pesticide. US corn is banned in Europe, most of Asia and even in Mexico. Other items such as soybeans and wheat grown in the US is similarly contaminated. Go with organic. Check out:

        Food Inc.
        King Corn
        The Future of Food

You are what you eat, and you get what you pay for!

    3. Ive been vegan for years and have never suffered from a lack of protein. i rarely eat tofu or any processed “meats” either. your body was designed to live healthfully without animal protein.

  15. I have the Vitamix 5200. Is this machine OK for the juicing fast?

    1. Susanne,
the Vitamix is a blender, so it does not extract the juice. Read my article about Juicing Versus Blending.

  16. ok, so I have been reading on alot of sites that you shouldn’t mix fruits n veggies when juicing, is this true?? does it really make a difference?? also, I see so many different opinions on how much juices to drink in a day….help???

  17. sorry i seen my answer on the veggie mixed with fruit question but one more thing i see that you are supposed to mix one part water to three parts juice and that you should drink 80oz a day is this all correct when doing a fast??

    1. Krystal, not sure where you got the info about drinking 80oz. I believe Joe drank approx 64oz per day.

  18. Hi,
Just to clarify, the 4 drink recipes that are listed are the one’s Joe used during his fast? Did he use a different one throughout the day, or 1 juice recipe 4x per day. I just want to know what Joe specifically used.
    thanks!

    1. Mary Kay,
The original Mean Green Recipe is the one Joe Cross makes. I added the others for variety.

  19. what about mixing one part water to three parts juice is that something you have to do??

    1. You do not need to dilute the juices, but you may.

  20. Can you put carrots in the drink?
I don’t see any recipes with them in you list

    1. I just started experimenting with juicing before my wife and I officially start and used a lot of carrots. Carrots are kind of sweet and mix well with many veggies and fruits.

I made more of a sweet juice with carrots, apples, pears, celery and it was absolutely delicious!!

    2. I recently started juicing and really really like the following recipe with what random stuff i had in the house:
      2 apples
      2 carrots
      a handful of cranberries
      serves 1. Hope this helps!

  21. I’m inspired. After watching Fat, Sick and Nearly Dead I went to Macy’s and bought a Breville. I guess I just multiply the ‘mean green’ recipe by 6 to get my daily intake?

Now I’m trying to figure out how to manage taking a container to work without a “safe” refrigerator…anybody have suggestions?

    1. Pyhll – I bought a 40 oz Thermos and it works perfect. I learned a sweet trick. Fill it full of ice and water and chill it before you make your juice. When the juice is ready, dump the ice and water and put the juice in the Thermos. I start work at 8am and on one super busy day I didn’t get to it until 5pm and it was still chilled. Don’t scrimp, buy the 25.00 one. All metal.

  22. Hi, I am wondering if I can drink the herbal tea yerba mate while on the juice fast? Please let me know asap. I am so excited to live healthier!

    1. It is my understanding that yerba mate has caffeine and caffeine is not recommended on a fast.

  23. Hey Pyhll, funny, I just read your post after I posted mine. We just went to Macy’s last night and bought our Breville and it was on sale! LOL! My Husband is also wondering the same thing you asked. We are thinking of a small ice cooler and we bought a slim fast shaker drink container at Walmart to put the drink in. Along with straws he will take. Good luck to you too!! 🙂

  24. I’m new to juicing and have a dumb question. The pulp that is left from everything, is there any use to it? can u re-do the pulp to try to get more juice out of it. If not do you just throw that away?

    1. Jorge,
This post gives some suggestions for what to do with juice pulp.

  25. I wanted to offer some encouragement to those who are giving this a try. For the past 2 months, I have been “blending”, and have lost 20+ lbs (probably more if you consider the muscle growth from walking, swimming, etc.). I blend twice a day (breakfast/lunch), and 99% of the time prepare a rice dish for dinner, with carrots and other veggies, as well as some raw nuts, like cashews. I am looking forward to the “total juice” fast, though. I am moving to France next month for a student-exchange with my business school, and am looking to drop at least 10 more lbs before I depart in late-August. With all of the hearty food in France, it will help! The good thing is, I will be walking between 4-6 miles per day as a necessity, not just for health! I think that exercise alone will allow me to jump-start a program once I return next year.

There’s the proof, my friends. If a red-blooded college student can do it, I know any of you can! Good luck to all of you beginning the fast. I’ll be joining you soon! Keep it +

    1. Charlie,
Thanks for sharing! Way to go!

  26. Ok, so I apologize for this question, but how far into the juice fast should you stay by a bathroom….I know there’s a point in the fast where you should so is it day 2 – 3 – 4 the reason I am asking is I’m planning to start the juice on the weekend to avoid that happening at work but I don’t know when I should start?? Thanks

    1. Krystal,
Everyone will have a unique experience on their juice fast. I personally don’t need to “stay by the bathroom”. Weekends are a good time to start.

    2. I’ve been on the fast now for ten days and have only had one “visit” that was “loose”. Other than that, my body took to it without complaint.

  27. Well I didn’t mean anything uncontrollable I just meant I know that your system will clean itself out a lot in the beginning. even on fat, sick and nearly dead she said that after her first morning drink she was in the bathroom for a good hour …that’s what I meant. If its worse in the beginning when does it subside.

  28. @ Tim – I quit a pack and a day habit during a 14 day fast. In my opinion, it is the best way to quit because you are dedicated to something that goes above and beyond your habit. For me, I wasn’t just quitting I was cleansing my body. I kept my focus on that and the challenge of not eating solid food, not having my coffee, etc. simply diluted the desire to smoke. It won’t be easy, but you can do it. Best wishes!

  29. Can I drink more than 64 oz a day?

    1. Here is a good rule of thumb that I’ve read. Basically take your weight, divide by two = number of ounces per day. So, a 200 lb person should drink 100 oz or about 12 – 8oz cups per day. Of course as you lose weight, your amount you need to drink will lessen. For example, at 160 lbs divided by 2 = 80 ounces or 10 cups per day…and so on 🙂

  30. If you do Not really like Cilantro Recipe #3 is awful. I don’t mind cilantro and it nearly made my wife and I sick just in smell alone.

You can obviously remove or replace the cilantro and it may be different.

#1 & #2 were both good going to try #4 tomorrow.

  31. watched the movie…bought the veggies and fruit immediately after…starting tomorrow. I am very hopeful. Wish me luck!!!!

    1. good luck, kimberle!

  32. Do you need to remove the stem from the kale before juicing??

    1. You can juice the whole kale stem 🙂

  33. I have PREPARED for the last three days, right after completing your movie ! i have been hooked on the idea of a major re-boot! However; I do not have insurance, so I won’t be ‘seeing a doc’. I do take meds. just started in the beginning of this month. Its to help me to stop smoking, but its also good for depression and lack of concentration (a sx of depression, but a seperate issue as far as this medicine goes.)It’s called Wellbutrin. Anywho, in just a few, short days I will be starting your TEN day recommendation….I have a lot of faith and am not nervous. I am surrounded in junk food and hae an addictive personality, but I just feel that I want this so much….so! Once i begin, i will start video taping, I’m Italian (and Irish) so i will be taking my first drink saying SALUTE to JOE!!!! Keep in touch, M.

    1. Hi Melissa,
I don’t represent Joe Cross, but we are all big fans here. Congratulations on your decision to start juicing! Don’t forget to join our mailing list and our facebook page to keep in touch! You can also access Joe’s community site here.

  34. question:How many servings do receipts above yield?

  35. Meant “recipes”! Cleary I need to get this started – My brain is need of cleansing!!!

  36. I seen your video on netflix and it was so inspring. I had been on the akaline diet for two weeks and had good success, but was more interested in your diet plan w/juicing. Between both diets over the course of a month, I’ve lost 14 pounds. I have a long ways to go with an additional 60-80 pounds yet to lose.

Is there a difference in benefits between juicing or blending?

PS: Although your video was extremely inspiring, I targeted juicing 10 days, but only lasted 3 full days. I felt a lot better even after the three days. I went off of it for 3-4 days and am back on it, this being my 2nd day. I truly want to target no less than 10.

What can I do to get farther than 3 days. Is there something in the diet/jucing I need to change? Would love your help….another 60-80 to go!

    1. Congratulations Vickie! You can always visit Joe’s Reboot community for support.

  37. I saw Joe’s video on Netflix. I told my boyfriend about it and casually mentioned that I’d like him to watch it with me to understand better what I was going on about and I wanted him to see it so that he could support me while I did it. He ordered a top of the line professional juicer and surprised me with it by having it delivered to our front door AND he has agreed to do the juice fast with me!! August 1, 2011. I have committed to 30 days he wants to pull in 60. I am so excited about the idea of having my energy level that I once had back. I’m just 45 and should not feel this sluggish every day. Thank you Joe!

  38. I saw the documentary along with a few others and it is time to get started! The kids are with their grandparents for three weeks, I am making my shopping list and I’m off to the store! I am excited and I am working to pull some family members in to.

  39. First time juicer. Tried the original mean green juice. Turned out very well. I’m only doing juice in the morning as a meal replacement. Gonna go 7 days and maybe more. I’ll keep you posted.

  40. Just bought my new Breville today and already started my first batch. It was interesting. Not bad though. So we will see how things go. I have my parents on it as well. So hopefully this works out well. I am not really overweight (could lose 5 lbs) but I need some energy back. Feel sluggish every day. Not fasting but using this as a supplement for now…maybe fast for a week or so in the future. Oh yeah saw the documentary as well…eye opener…thanks Joe for getting me started on this. I think everyone could use some fresh veggies and fruits…enough of this processed lifestyle. Well good luck all!

  41. I really enjoyed your movie. After I watch it I showed it to my mother. It opened her mind to fasting and juicing.
    Thanks.

    Peace

  42. Hi Joe,

I appreciate the example you are being to so many. I had a heart attack back in July 2009 and almost died. Through the depression afterwords, I gained a lot of weight. I saw your documentary recently and I just had my first two glasses of Juice today. I had the mean green and then I used fruit for my next batch. I am hoping this will help me lose weight and also help any neggative things in my body to help heal. Most of all though, I want to be around for my children and be an example to them for a healthy life style. Thanks again for all you do.

  43. I’m starting my juice fast today. So far I’ve only got a blender and the juice is real pulpy but I can stick it until I get out to the mall to buy me a juicer. I do live the taste though.

  44. Is it ok if I just drink the mean green recipe throughout my fast…I don’t really like the taste, I think it’s the kale that I don’t like but, I’m willing to drink it because I know kale is very good for you.

  45. I am on day 2 of my fast and my throat is sore does that have to do with my fast??

    1. One possible answer is that you are experiencing a “healing crisis”. If you have had a sore throat, strep throat, etc., in the past, your body may be cleansing itself of the residual effects of the illness. It is fairly common to experience the same symptoms you had with the original illness.

  46. Because I just watched your documentary, my family is about to start a 10 day juice fast. My question is; what is a good substitute for Kale. I am from Alabama and we just do not have Kale here. I didn’t even know what it was. I am buying my vegetables from the farmers market and private farms and there is certainly no Kale there! What can I use instead?

    1. @ Becky, any of the green leafy vegetables will provide lots of nutrition. Such as collard and mustard greens, spinach, swiss chard, etc.

  47. Just Started Jucing today. Love the taste of the mean Green, Glad I finally found it, It was not on the recipes in the original site I had to hunt for it. I have alot of weight to lose like 80-90lbs, and six medications to get off of I am in my early forties and want to get my energy back my healthy body back and teach my twins about good nutrition and making changes can be a great thing.

  48. When adding the fruits and vegetables, should everything be peeled ie: cucumbers, apples, etc…?

    1. About peeling the veggies and fruits: organic should be fine, but conventionally grown foods may have pesticides in the peel. At the very least, wash them thoroughly!

  49. Today is the end of day 1 of a 10 day juice fast that my husband and I are doing! It’s only been one day and I am so excited and proud! I have tried a couple of the different green juice recipes but have not found one that I would call “delicious” but they are drinkable. I’m hoping that either it will grow on me or I’ll be able to tweak the recipes with a little more practice. We both quit smoking after MANY years three weeks ago yesterday, and we said once that is behind us then getting our health back is next! Well, here we go….wish us luck!!!!

  50. Today was my first day, I look forward to my journey. I have not been able to lose weight with all the other fads. This is a change of life and I look so forward to it, my husband is being very supportive! Good luck everyone!

  51. Do you guys realize that this is not the blog of Joe Cross? Stop thanking him on someone else’s blog.

    1. I was thinking the same thing…LOL…Thanks My Juice Cleanse for the tips and open forum.

  52. I just got done watching the documentary via Netflix and I have to say it was inspiring. I plan on buying a juicer in the morning and I will do a 10 day fast. Keep up the amazing work!!

  53. Today is day one, after watching the video, my husband decided to go for it all the way….My prayer is that i get off allergy and asthma meds. for good and that my head stops hurting.

My husband’s motivation is weight energy and well…i will share that testimony wants we get past the 10 days….you all are awesome…

  54. Hello,

With summer drawing to a close, where does one find these fresh veggies in the winter. I live in St. Louis, MO?

    Thanks.

    Crcompo

  55. The movie was just confirming what i already knew in my heart of hearts for all those who have a hard time affording it grow your own organic garden and juice for nearly free 8 months out of the year thanks Joe

  56. What is the benifit of juicing instead of blending the vegetable in to smoothy? Aren’t you giving up on the fiber and other nutrients. We always have a lot of waste after juicing

  57. I’m only curious about the protein intake. If I’m weightlifting and I’ve decided to have a green juice weeeek, how will it affect on my musle tissue, will I lose a lot? Or is there any way to increase protein intake?

  58. I am on Day 3 of my fast, Day 2 was a little bad in morning time getting up for work but once I was going I was ok. Day 3 I felt very tired and like I am getting a little sore throat but I know this has to do with my body adjusting to the juicing. Did a little walking on tredmil to get my energy going. I am on my way to Day 4 very excited to see more results tomorrow. My goal is 10 day fast!! If I can go for 15 day fast, I will def continue! Good Luck to all that is juicing

  59. Can I do the 10 day fast and still have the energy necessary to continue my exercise routine? I’m training for a half marathon and currently have to run 25 miles a week, split unevenly between 5 days.

  60. Wow i so enjoyed your Documentry. This is my second day ,, I just learned that y’all this site with recipes , thank you ,, my goal is 30 days, Ive gotten the ok from my integrative Dr. We are both excited ,,
    Thank you again *=)

  61. Im wanting to get enough vegetables and fruits for the original reboot program that is shown above for a week,is the ingredients and the amount that will be needed for the day? And if so im thinking i just have to multiply by 7 according to the daily receipe,im seeing the ingredients and the amount that is needed but it dosent specify if the ingredients that is listed above for a day, or two,so i dont know how much of it to get, can you please let me know, thanks! 🙂

  62. Im hoping its not just one juicing drink because this will become very expensive,im wanting to do the 30 day juicing fast,i just have no idea how much i will need for the week.

  63. Totoally inspired after watching the movie….am looking forward to this the beginning of Sept. I am 30 years old and terribly sick all the time and so overweight. I want to change my life around and feel good about myself. Is there any tips on biying vegis cheaper or taking some of the ingredients out of this juice due to cost….cause i cant afford 400 a month on vegitabls. =C Any advice?? Thanks.

  64. Is it crucial to add fruit in with the veggies or can carrots be substituted in it’s place?

  65. Today is my first full day on the juicing fast. I found it hard to keep it on a set track. Can anyone help me out. I would like to know what some peoples drinking schedules are. makes me feel like I am part of a team. 🙂

  66. My husband saw the movie Fat, Sick and Nearly Dead three Sundays ago. We got the juicer that morning and went shopping and started right away. Three weeks later went to the Doc for a check up and blood work and in two weeks we will get the results. Doc said my heart sounded real good and my systolic rate was almost perfect and it had been in the 170 forever. However my Diastolic was high working on getting that down now. I could go on an on with how this Juice SAVED MY LIFE. But don’t have the space. I prayed and fast and this was HIS answer.

  67. Can someone tell me how much one the recipe makes? Is it just one, 20oz, serving? Do you have to core your apples?

    Thank you!

  68. Did joes urticaria cleared up with two month juicing?

  69. Day 4 of 100% liquid fast. I am not new to fasting. The longest I’ve successfully done is 21 days. Felt terrific. Watched Fat sick and nearly dead and was motivated to start another fast. This time, I am juicing more greens. Looking for even better results.

  70. A friend and myself decided to try the juice fast and today is day 10 so far I have lost 17 pounds and her as well. I can’t think of another way to loose weight this fast, I will always use this diet in my life I have never felt healthier my goal is to loose 60 pounds and I’m confident with this diet I will reach my goal. Good luck to all of you in barking on the juice fast journey, it will be a trip you will enjoy taking the results will surely speak for them self!!!!!!!!!!

  71. My son had me watch Joes’s documentary today and I’m so inspired to do this. I think I’m 50 lbs over weight. I’ve tried many diets. They’ve worked but I kept back sliding. I also suffer from depression and turned to food to comfort me. I want to be healthy again. “B. C.”( before children). I use to watch my weight. I was always scared of being over weight. But it happened not in a good way. I was in an abusive marriage and found it hard to get out and try to take care of myself again cause my husband at the time would get jealous. And I just lost myself in it. I finally got out. And was dieting and dd the “soup diet”. It worked really well for me. I had lost about 30 lbs But again. I back slid. I was a person who was laid off and unemployed for about 2yrs and recently got a job. Thank God. He answered my prayers. I’m gonna try this as so as I can buy a juicer. Thank you Joe and Phil for sharing your story with us. I hope I can stay healthy this time around.

    Sincerely,
    Sandra V

  72. Found a great new recipe you may want to add to your site. I’ve been juicing for almost a month half of which was 100% fasting the other half was 2 – 3 juices per day and 1 meal of veggies. I was kind of getting sick of the taste of some my juices as I have to make them generally the same due to a bleeding disorder I have, for which I take warfarin, so per my doctor, the dietary change was ok, so long as I kept the amounts of green I consumed fairly consist so as not to cause a rollercoaster in my INR levels, but, I digress.

Yesterday, went and had “lunch” with two friends at a local raw restaurant here in Portland Oregon, lunch is in quotes becuase we had juice. They make the most AMAZING green juice there – they call it ‘Thai Greens’, and omg I am in love. I told them I was juice fasting and they told me how they make it. For approx 16 oz juice, it’s the juice of 1 lime, juice of 1-2 apples, juice of a ‘thumb’ of ginger, about a half a bunch of cilantro and about half a bunch of basil (Thai basil if you can get it in quantity without paying an arm and a leg). This is the best tasting green juice I’ve ever had – so bright and refreshing. It gave me a whole new lease on my juice fast and this will be my ‘go to’ juice for some time now I think. So great! Try it!!

    1. I just started juicing today and I’m Thai so seeing your post made me extra excited to try this! I’m going to do the fast for 6 days if I can, short and sweet goals lead to bigger ones I believe. I’m taking it with http://www.youtubejuiceplus.com so that I can get maximum benefits. They’re whole food, 17 kinds of organic fruits and vegetables which is not the real thing but the real deal and next best thing. Thanks for your delicious recipe!!!

  73. I have been juicing for almost a month now and there have been great changes in my life and ALL the LIVES I have touched. Everywhere I go I share how reboosting my system has effected and changed my life. Everyone that takes me up on my offer to juice for them their first batch are hooked. I can’t find Kale in any of my stores near my home anymore LOL. I know the stores are wondering what is going on. I have had to go way out to find it now. I have one store that i don’t share with anyone just so i will always have a supply of kale waiting for me.:) lol. I will say this…If everyone knew about this there would be no need for Jenny Craig/Weight Watchers and the GYMS would be filled with skinny People …because they have sooooo much energy and have to work it out! lol. I have now resorted to making small business cards with the recipe and the movie title. My favorite part of all this I can make promises about how this can and will change their life…so much so I tell everyone after sharing. “Thank you for allowing me to change your life today.”

  74. Very excited to start a juice cleanse! Would the above 4 recipes be one whole day of juicing (4 meals a day)?

    Thank you!

  75. Im on day two of juicing :).
im trying to go atleast 30 days, at the most 65 :)!
    Wish me luck.

  76. I’m was pleasantly surprised to see your documentary on Netflix. I’d never heard of it but I’ve been preaching this type of eating for many years. I was a medic in the military and when I was discharged nearly 20 years ago now I started studying alternative/complimentary medicine and I greatly enjoyed watching your documentary. I’m an LMT and CMT I also work with biofeedback. I’ve have plans for a holistic health and research center where these dietary changes where planned as the core part of treatment along with exercise and other therapeutic modalities, my colleagues and I will track all patient therapies, treatments and outcomes and the treatment plans of course will all be tailored to the individual. Hope to be up and running within the next year or so here in Texas.

    1. I have been on the fast for 3 days and have lost 7 pounds already. It is great to know that you are trying to open up a holistic center here in Texas. What part of TX?

  77. can i do the mean green juice with a blendtec blender isnt it better than a juicer so i wont lose the fibres?

    1. Follow the link

I like my juicer never tasted it out of the blender let us know how it tastes.

  78. i have made 15 days on the juice cleanse and have lost some inches and about 19 lbs. i not sure (health wise) if i should continue juicing or get off it.

    does anyone have any advice?

if and when i get off juicing how do i introduce solid foods into my daily eating?

  79. My Mom and I have the Jack Lalanne Power Juicer and after watching the movie we are completely inspired,we’re going to try to do the 30 day fast, starting in October 2011. I’m 28 years old, height is 5’6 and weigh 260lbs. We don’t always have the funds because we are unemployed taking care of my sweet 91 year old Grandma. Pray for us… We need the LORD to help us get healthy. God Bless you all for what your doing for people.

  80. Question: Is any dark green leafy vegetable good? Can’t find KALE easily but have bought collards greens, spinach and celery. Also, can you drink too much?

    1. Francine,
Any of the green leafy veggies are good. Most people cannot drink too much, however the vitamin k content in these foods may have interactions with anticoagulant medications. This is why we recommend you consult your doctor if taking medications.

  81. Saw Fat, Sick and Nearly Dead and watched it agin the next day. 2 days later when my boyfriend came back from a hunting trip, I begged him to watch with me (3rd time watching). Felt so compelled that I went out and bought the Jack LaLane juicer at WMT for about $99.

Boyfriend had the juicer assembled the next morning (I slept in) and we both stared at it. We finally broke down and added a peeled orange – it went so smoothly, we added a few pineapple slices and some strawberries. The BEST juice I ever had.

I didn’t have enough veggies to go anything and had to work that day. The next morning, the juicer stared at us again (and we at it), so we tried the carrot, apple and ginger recipie that came wih the juicer. EXCELLENT and kept me hunger free until lunch (at work).

Boyfriend tried to replicate V8 juice while I was at work and drank some – he didn’t care for it. He saved me some and the beets overpowered everything else. We are using the remainder as a soup base this week.

Believe there will be trial and error to this, but am ready to plan a true “fast” when we get the hang of it and have plenty of supplies. Thanks JOE CROSS for inspiring us (I’m a pharmacist and boyfriend is a retired chiropractor).

  82. I am planning on buying a juicer this weekend to begin my 15 day commitment. I live on a fixed income and would like to know about how much money it will take to supply all the fruits and veg. for the week or daily for this? I would like to have an idea so I can budget my income for this journey.

  83. Hi, I thought that I read somewhere that you mentioned a book that was good for juicing, but I’ve been scanning the posts and can’t find it. Is there a book that you recommend for juicing with recipes, etc?

    Thank you.

    1. One of the first books I used to recommend for recipes is The Juicing Bible by Pat Crocker. I also have a list of our readers top favorites here

  84. 1 Week’s batch: Makes enough for 4 days, about a pint for each day. Is this recipe a healthy recipe that would be beneficial to my health? I love it served cold immediately after juicing.

    1 bundle Kale

    1 bag baby spinach

    1 green pepper

    1 red pepper

    1 yellow pepper

    1 orange pepper

10 carrots -tops cut off but not peeled

    10 stalks celery

11/2 package grape or cherry tomatoes or 4 Roma tomatoes

    2 English cucumbers

    1 or two jalapenos

lime peeled and 1/4 for each day

    1. Go Kimberly!

  85. I just started the Mean Green program. I tried recipe 1 today and I think I put too much ginger in it. I would like a recipe with more fruits in it just to make the taste better. From what I understand you drink 8oz of the juice 4 times a day..correct?

    1. Rick,
you can add an extra apple or a small handful of grapes to the recipe. You can drink up to approx 64 oz/day

  86. Started juice fast, inspired by joe’s movie, wish me luck need to lose 60 or so lbs
25 dollar for first to days of juicing does this sound about right grocery store prices.
But like A visa commercial good health is priceless.
    Great blog great information

    1. I Average 55 a week

  87. Hello!
Just watched your show last night on Netflix! Was great and very inspiring. I know someone personally who could benefit and had the same diagnosis as both of you. I will not have to grab to much to start, actually just few vegtables. I do have a question though carbs- is their a way to find out the carbs per each drink? Type 1 diabetic- who wants to stay healthier…. and feel more energetic I am on a pump and need to program it for the amount of insulin. I already know when I eat fruits and vegtables I feel better and do not use as much insulin. The problem is when you go low you grab the sugar to bring you back up. So rather than guessing I thought I would ask. Keep up the great work you both look wonderful and much more happy!

    Thanks!

  88. Hello,
I was wondering could you substitute the kale with spinach will that still work for my juicing plan? Thanks

    1. Yes you may substitute any greens that you like.

  89. Carey,

Thank you for posting these recipes on your site. I have a question regarding the recipes. Is each Mean Green recipe one serving? Does each recipe make about 8 oz. – 1 serving of juice? Also, from your experience do you peel the ginger before you put it in the juicer?

    Thanks!

    1. Depending on the size of your produce the recipes should yield about 16 oz or one serving. Yes I peel the ginger first.

      1. Thank you for your quick answer and response!

  90. I am really excited, and inspired by joe’s video. This is my second clense, my first clense was done for 10 days and i lost a considerable amount of weight (16 lbs). However one thing I did not feel the first time or second time around was the full effects of a clense. My body has stayed regular with or without the juice without any irregularities. Does any one know why?

My diet off the juice is okay not 100% healthy with a treat now and then, overall balanced meals for the most part.

  91. I went through a lot of these replies, but didn’t see the answer I was curious about. I hear about all the healing properties of these juices, and many peoplehave told me about them and how great they are and have healed them.

Obviously I’m not expecting to be “healed” completely, but maybe in better health? I am bi-polar and on antidepressants and an antipyschotic, and stuff for sleep. I was off all meds for three years before my life turned upside down and was put back on them. Love to get off them again.

    I’d appreciate any insight 🙂

    1. Jessie,
Generally speaking when the body takes in adequate nutrition it is able to heal itself. Juicing is giving the body a super-boost of this nutrition. Fruits and vegetables have differing amounts of vitamins and minerals, so juicing a variety will provide a solid spectrum of nutrition. Each person will respond and heal in different ways. Definitely you’ll be in better health. Consult your doctor first if you are currently on meds to avoid negative interactions.

      1. Thank you for the reply! I will definitely be talking to my doctor, I see him Monday anyways then I need to get a juicer so I’m a few weeks away but wanted to do all my research. 🙂 Thanks again!

  92. Hi, just watched the movie with Joe & Phil they are a very big inspiration. I’m going to do this starting Jan. I don’t have health ins. but, I will go get anual check up in Dec. I’m looking forward to this. I do have a juicer it’s the Juicemann II i’ve had it for several years and have only made carrott and apple juice with it but, didn’t stick with it. But, I’m encouraged about what I saw with the results from juicing. I use to fast 2x a week years ago and I sure felt alot healthier than now. I’m 63 years old and 70lbs overweight. I’m going to committ myself as well to exercise using walking, swimming, dancing. 2012 will be a new break through in my life of course with the help and determination that the Lord will give me. He helped me to quit smoking, drinking, drugs over 30 years ago and now he will give me the strength once again. Please pray for me!!

  93. I am getting ready to do the 15 day fast. Hopefully I’ll be able to plan ahead enough to do it. My DH and I have been juicing on and off for about 10 years. He was diagnosed with Chron’s disease, and did a juice fast, then started slowly adding whole fruits and veggies. We are now vegan and he has been able to get off all meds for his illness. I’m not saying that will happen for everyone, but I think it’s worth a shot. I need to get back into it to lose weight and help with the lack of energy and sugar addiction I seem to have! Going to the store in a few hours!

  94. Ok, so we have tried the Jack Lalanne juicer and it burned up after 4 uses. I am debating between the Omega VRT350 which is 379$ or the Breville JE98XL Juice Fountain Plus which is 179$. Obviously a 200$ price difference. The Jack Lalanne was only 99$, but as I said before, I only used it 4 times and it was toast (I got my money back). My girlfriend and I are trying to get the best product that will last a long time and produce the most juice without losing any nutrients to oxidation. I have read several post’s on here and have narrowed it down to these two juicers. If you have either of these juicers please tell me how long you have had it and how well do you like it. Also, does it give you most of the juice? The Jack Lalanne pulp was real wet. Thanks for any feedback.
    Dave

    1. Hi Dave,
I’ve had a Breville for quite a while now and it still works great. Reviews for this brand are very high. The Omega VRT is a top of the line juicer, thus the price (I’ve never owned one). Omega VRT is a single auger juicer – it crushes the vegetables at a lower speed and works very well for wheatgrass and green vegetables. Historically single augers weren’t as good with harder foods such as carrots. However the Omega VRT boast that it handles a wide variety foods including carrots. It also works at a lower speed thus less heat and theoretically less oxidation. Hope this helps. Check Amazon for product reviews!

      1. Carey, thank you for your response and everything you have done to make such an informative web site! I will read the reviews you suggested. It may come down to a coin flip. I just want a really good juicer, so I get the most for my money.

        1. I got the Breville Carey! So far it works great! I got the variable speed $199 one from Amazon.com Thank you for the advice, its much better quality than my previous one. I did find a vegetable I wasn’t too fond of in my juicer: Arugula, It smells like a mixture of frog slime and skunk! lol Anyway thanks again!

  95. I’m drinking my first Green Juice (original). I have a Jack LaLanne power juicer. It shoots out pulp and doesn’t seem to break down the kale that much. If necessary, I have a blender. Any ideas?

    1. Julie, I took my Jack LaLanne power juicer back after some of the same issues. I broke down and bought a Breville for twice the price, but the quality is much better! In addition, I am a beginner, so I have been experimenting with recipes and I have found that organic veggies seem to give me more juice, although they are more expensive, I personally seem to be getting more juice for my money. One last thing. I tried sending my pulp back through my Jack LaLanne and I burned it up, so whatever you do, don’t try that! LOL

      1. Dave, thanks for the advice. I have put the pulp back through and didn’t have a problem, but I’ll keep that in mind.

  96. I’m on Day 17 of my Juice Reboot! I watched Joe Cross’s film “Fat, Sick, and Nearly Dead” and I was inspired. After two back surgeries, may procedures, and severe chronic pain, I’ve ballooned up in weight. I’ve tried every diet but my metabolism seems out of sync with all the cortisone injections and medicines. So far, I’ve only lost 10 pounds but I’ve lost 2 inches in my waist and 2 inches in my hips and my pants are hanging more loosely. Of course, I should have gone to my doctor already but I plan to do so next week. I plan to stay on it for 60 days to lose 50 pounds. If I don’t lose it in 60 Days, I will take a short food break, then go back to Juicing again and perhaps move towards eating raw. That is a huge change for a person who loves bbq ribs. But I also love animals.

I bought the Breville Juice Fountain Plus, centrifugal juicer. I LOVE IT! It is a matter of personal opinion of whether you are extracting more nutrients from a masticating juicer and think you should buy that. The Juice Fountain Plus was $149 and looks great, operates quickly and takes 5 minutes to clean. Plus, it comes with this nifty plastic pitcher that separates the froth. It is handy to own just by itself! If you join the “Reboot”, they send you a nifty recipe card.

My favorite recipe is 3 apples, 3 carrots, 3-6 Kale leaves, piece of ginger size of thumb.
I have stocked up on Costco case of green apples and a case of red apples, 5lb bag of carrots, couple bags of Kale, few Cucumbers, celery, some pears, few strawberries, lemons, and ginger. Kale is immensely rich in nutrients. Read online about the nutrient and sugar level of your foods. If you are diabetic, my recipe will not work for you as carrots and apples have too much sugar. I think if you eat more greens than fruit, your pancreas will work less hard at processing the blood sugar and you will probably lose weight faster. So I need to take my own advice and go with more greens : ) Basically you can create your own recipes. The Joe Cross Recipes are on the Reboot website. I drink whenever I’m hungry (about 4-6 8oz glasses a day). If I have to go somewhere, I’ll take a V8 Fusion with me in the car because the can is convenient. The Reboot also recommends you drink water and drink unsweetened coconut juice for rehydration. It’s expensive and you will either like it or hate it. I like it!

For you ladies, I’ve also noticed that the pores on my nose have shrunk a bit. Some have actually nearly disappeared. They are not producing as much excess oil and thus are not requiring constant masking. I wonder if flushing out the animal fats may have something to do with that?

Good luck to you all and happy juicing! I can’t believe I finally found something I can do and stick with. In fact, I’m drinking a juice right now…..

  97. I hope I’m not repeating a question here (I kind of skipped down to the bottom to comment)… I’m wanting to start a juice fast in the next coming week. I’m super excited and I am aiming for at least 10 days. My body needs a serious detox. My one concern, or question rather, is do I need to do any type of colon cleansing? I’ve read in different blogs etc that enemas or colon cleansing are important. I was just wondering what other people did during their fasts. I know GNC sells some nice colon cleansing packs for a program of 15 days. I just want to make sure that when my body detoxes I’m not re-absorbing all the bad stuff. Thanks!

    1. Hi Caitlin,
I do sometimes supplement with an herbal colon cleanse before the juice fast. I like Renew Life products but I’m sure there are other good products. Enemas are good if you feel comfortable with that. Don’t worry too much about re-absorbing toxins. The body has seven different pathways for getting rid of them and the juice helps to flush them out.

  98. Hi,

I was just wondering what would be the pros and cons between juicing and getting a cleanser from a GNC?

    1. There are many types of cleansing products to buy and they can be helpful. Only by doing a juice cleanse (not eating solid food) can you give the colon a rest from digesting in order to remove toxins.

  99. I recently started juicing at 41, Weight 185……obviously weight was never an issue, but energy levels seem low. After 5 days of juicing I feel 100 times better.
I’m sold on this approach one of the few things that just make sense. Everyone should eat better, and this helps with that for us that are busy.

Wife, and now kids share in a glass each day after school. They even feel better

  100. Hi, I just watched the bonus scenes on the Fat, Sick, and Nearly Dead DVD. One of them had a hotel chef showing Joe what he juiced for his three meals. I made notes of what I could see on the platter, they mentioned the what, but not the amount:

    Breakfast: 4 green apples

    Lunch (the big meal):
bunch of lancinato kale (12-15 leaves?)
    4 carrots
    celery (4-6?)
    cucumber – large
    beet
    2 green apples
    tomato
spinach – big handful, not as much as kale
    lemon – half?
    ginger – chunk

    Dinner
    green apple
lancinato kale – 6 leaves, half as much as lunch serving
    cucumber – 1 huge
    half lemon
    celery – 6 stalks

  101. Hi good afternoon, I would like to know how and how many glasses of juice I have to take during the day? if I do only those that are in the recipe, or I can use any vegetables? thanyou so much for your response.

  102. Does anybody know if the Hamilton Beach Big Mouth Pro Juice Extractor it good juicer to use for these recipes??

  103. Can you juice something the night before and drink it the next day?! I have to leave early in the morning for work and dont want to wake up all my room mates. It is not pasteurized, so it is safe the next day?
    thank y ou

    1. Nicole,
You can save your juice up to 24 hours in the fridge. Make sure it’s tightly sealed 🙂

  104. This all sounds amazing and I am ready to “give it a go” but I was wondering, has anyone experienced any other side effects, such as irritability? I have tried diets in the past but after about a week, I generally get very moody and irritable. That alone tends to make me quit. I know that it is because my body is craving the “bad” food that I have been cutting out, but is there any way to treat that? I’d really like to get through the beginning without my family hating me 🙂

    1. I live in Australia and have searched everywhere for kale but we don’t sell it over here, can I use something else?

  105. Just curious if anyone has been juicing and has fibromyalgia ,and if it helped (even if a little) with the pain or fatigue. I was just wondering if i had more to look forwaard to than getting more nutrition and perhaps shedding a few pounds that the meds are putting on me :c) thanks!

  106. Hi There, I was wondering, are the above recipes enough for a full day juice fasting? If not, could you give information on how much veg/fruit I should buy for a full day’s worth… thank you in advance 🙂

  107. First of all I want to say thank you for posting the Mean Green recipe. I had searched for it but had come up empty handed each time.

Now that said, I tried it for the first time this morning and am going to give this a shot. I’ll say that it really wasn’t half bad. Really tasted more cucumber than any of the other ingredients. I did notice though that after following the recipe, it almost completely filled the jug that came with my Breville juicer. Since I was only making it for myself, it seemed like A LOT of juice and far more than the 16-20 ounces that are recommended. Do most of the recipes on the site make as much juice? Just curious so I can determine how to pare it down a bit so that I’m not making too much each time.

    Thanks!

  108. I just had a blood test and Dr. appointment, my cholesterol is down 20 points, blood pressure is better than its been in ten years, triglycerides are down to 105, blood suger is down to 85. Oh and I lost 10 pounds! I think I’ll keep juicing.

  109. I need serious help!!!!!

My buddy and want to start the juice. We did make it the other night but almost threw up from the burning heart I think came from Kale. Does anyone else seem to have the same affect? What can I do so the kale isn’t so strong?

    Thanks,

    Mike

    1. Mike, you can decrease the amount of kale or substitute another green vegetable. You may also add a little more fruit until your tastebuds adjust. 🙂

  110. Lol this didn’t work I actually gained 40 pounds or so and now i’m very mad at everyone in the world so yeah..

  111. I was wondering would u get the same affected if just blended the fruits and veggies and not used a juicer.

    1. Blending does not extract juice. Look for the article entitled “Juicing vs. Blending” on the site.

  112. I am going to start the juice fast on Sat. for approximately five days (and continue for another 10 days if I dont feel horrible on the first five days). My question is this: Will I feel very sick? I have two girls (ages 9 and 10) which I have to take care of and run errands on weekends. Will I be able to do so or will I feel terrible? Also, I suffer from IBS and acid reflux. Will those symptoms come up when I’m doing the fast?

  113. I saw the movie a couple days ago, very inspiring! I went to the Reboot website and they have a 15 day plan..where you “eat clean and drink juice” for 5 days, then drink only juice for another 5, then again with the meals and juice….but in the movie Joe and Phil “juice” for 60 days. Did Joe and Phil ONLY drink juice for those 60 days, or did they eat the meals as well????

  114. Has anyone tried their juices pressed?

    1. The juice presses (Norwalk, Welles Juice Press) are the best, and there’s no one that would say otherwise. The juices are clean, pure, and totally pulp free. With that being said, the Norwalk is about $2000+, the Welles is about $400 *and* needs an additional masticator to chew the produce into a pressable form. A decent one will set you back about $250.

I’m saving for this setup, but meanwhile, my little Juiceman Jr works well enough. Any fresh juice from any juicer is going to better than not having any at all.

BTW, juicing and blending for breakfast and lunch for two months, I’ve lost 22 lbs. I can only imagine what would happen if I did a total juice fast. I’m pushing 60, so the weight is stubborn, lol.

  115. Green leafy vegetables and fruits contains minerals and nutrients which have the good taste when extracted by juicing machines. These juicing machines are easy, reliable and efficient since they have the blade which chops the vegetables and fruits into a fine liquid giving them a good taste.

  116. Day 1 of juicing…currently 300+ lbs. just received a Jack LaLane juicer for my birthday
and have tremendous help and support from family and friends. Here’s to a new me.

  117. Hey anyone in the southern California doing the juicing? My older sister recommended me to watch Fat, sick, and nearly dead. I am inspired by Joe and Phil as I gained a lot of weight and have health issues as well. If anyone would like to keep in touch and encourage via email let me know it would be good to set up a support system to cheer each other on. =^__^=

  118. Saw Joe’s documentary a week ago with my husband. First, my husband intensely dislikes any show that suggests HOW he should eat and pitches a fit if I bring a new gadget home. I have to admit, I don’t even know WHERE my bread maker is….I haven’t used it in years. He was truly impressed with Fat, Sick and Nearly Dead and has actually been encouraging me to hurry along my research so we can get a juicer ASAP. I have narrowed my juicer choice to the Breville. The problem….there are so many models! I’d like to juice (especially greens) and make nut and soy milks. Does anyone make a suggestion as to which might be best for my needs?

    1. If you plan on making soy & nut milk, you should definitely go with a vertical masticating juicer.

I have the Hurom juicer which is identical to the Omega VRT330 and I make almond milk all the time.

The juicer wasn’t cheap, but I like the slow press method of juicing over the high speed centrifugal types. If you do get a Hurom or Omega juicer just make sure it comes with the latest GE Ultem screen. The old models didn’t have this and they broke fairly easily.

  119. I made the mean green juice, but I thought it was nasty. I think I’m going to try mixing in a few more fruits to make it tastier.

  120. I started juicing a week ago but I’m easing into it. I am half juicing & half eating raw & cooked veggies and some fruits. I have many health problems, diabetes, HBP, history of CHF and have not seen my Dr. yet but plan to soon. Dr. Fuhrman is my choice for a new doctor who isn’t pushing the diabetes diet on me. I have extreme edema in one leg and belly which has not come down since juicing like I thought it might. I have pain in one lower leg and redness with limited movement that developed 2 days ago. Could it be related to my new diet? I have cut out all dairy and meats other than salmon. I also was in hosp. on IV antibiotics for over a month for an infection which has since cleared. Could I have a yeast problem? Confused and disappointed. Any suggestions would be helpful. Thanks

  121. Definitely very important to make sure you are taking a full spectrum vitamin supplement to ensure you are getting all the nutrients you need that you can’t get from only juice.
